Racist Black Bear Hunters Caught on Camera
What kind of person would support the slaughter of tens of thousands of Canadian bears for their skins? We have obtained video footage which documents that hunters made racist jokes and laughed as they skinned the corpse of a black bear – which (who knows?) could end up on the head of one of The Queen's Guards. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) buys real bearskin for the Guards' caps from the same auction which these men use to sell their bloody skins, so the MoD are supporting these kinds of men and what they stand for, not to mention the slaughter of the beautiful Canadian bears.
Bears killed for their hides are often shot during hunts, as many as one bear in seven is not killed immediately after being shot, and some escape wounded and die later from blood loss or starvation. In some Canadian provinces, there are no restrictions on the shooting of mothers who have nursing cubs, which leads to the slaughter of entire families during hunts when cubs are orphaned and left to die.
There is no excuse for racism, and there is no excuse for the murder of bears for their skins. The MoD are dragging their heels and taking too long to do the right thing – ditch real bearskins and go faux.
Watch the video that shows the true colours of the bear-skin industry and angers anti-racism groups around the world. Then sign the petition calling on the MoD to ditch the bearskin caps. Sign this petition:
Instead of financially supporting the shameful slaughter of black bears for The Queen's Guards' ceremonial caps, the UK should set a compassionate example by switching to high-tech and luxurious faux-fur fabrics and committing to ending the killing of black bears.
