He adds, "Not only is the purchase and importation of bearskins from Canada a deplorable waste of military funding, it is also a waste of animals' lives". letter
It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one guard's headpiece. Many of the bears are shot several times before they die, and some escape the hunters only to bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, orphaned cubs are left behind to starve.
