It's 'Blair' vs Brown as Michael Sheen Joins Bearskin Battle

© NPX/Starmaxinc

"Tony Blair" and his old rival Gordon Brown are sparring again … this time over the Queen's Guards' bearskin caps. Award-winning actor Michael Sheen, who expertly portrayed Tony Blair in The Queen, has written to the Prime Minister calling for an immediate end to the killing of Canadian black bears for the Royal Guards' fur caps.

In a letter from one "Prime Minister" to another, Michael writes that Britons are overwhelmingly opposed to the bear slaughter and that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reneged on its public promise to find a faux-fur alternative for the caps. He adds, "Not only is the purchase and importation of bearskins from Canada a deplorable waste of military funding, it is also a waste of animals' lives".

It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one guard's headpiece. Many of the bears are shot several times before they die, and some escape the hunters only to bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, orphaned cubs are left behind to starve.

Michael joins Ricky Gervais, Sir Roger Moore, Pamela Anderson, Julian Clary, Jeff Beck, Lucy Davis and other compassionate celebrities who have pledged their support for PETA's Unbearable Cruelty campaign.

You Can Help

Join Michael and thousands of other compassionate people by writing to Quentin Davies MP, Procurement Minister for the Ministry of Defense (MoD), below calling for a humane alternative to the Guards' bearskin caps.
